Who We Are, What We Are, and What We Do
Youth Out Loud is a summer program run by the Youth Media Institute of Seattle. Designed for teenagers (14-18), YOL gives the young people in the program the opportunity to explore different media techniques and learn about how media and digital arts can become dynamic life tools. Participants acquire technical skills in media production and are educated on matters including media justice, media literacy, and systematic oppression.
So what do we learn about? Well…
Media: What is it? Who makes it? Who owns it? And who gets left out?
Graphic Design: How to make your own poster, magazine or comic
Audio production: Get a chance to be on the radio, telling your story
Video production: Yeah, you get to make your own movie too!
Not to mention a ton of other really cool media/arts stuff, such as: digital photography, video editing, digital storytelling and more
At the end…
We host a showcase at the end of our summer program to show off all the hard work YOL participants put into this summer, and what they created. Showcase 2008 will be on Friday, August 22, 2008.
Also, each participant that successfully completes YOL gets a $500 stipend for all their hard work!
Where we’re at…
YOL operates out of the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, in Seattle’s Delridge/Whitecenter neighborhood. Our program runs for six weeks during the summer, from July 14-August 22, and classes are from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, Monday-Thursday.
