Beyond Beats and Rhymes:

The trailer for Byron Hurt’s documentary, Beyond Beats and Rhymes, was featured in our “media montage” on Day 1 of the YOL program. The film dissects the role of homophobia, manhood, and sexism in the hip-hop culture. Erin, one of our program directors, showed the clip to the group and opened up the floor for discussion. We then talked about how the desire to present a strong masculinity was a prevalent theme in the hip-hop videos we watch on MTV, Youtube, etc.  The entire film is also viewable (although in six parts) on Youtube.
